Maternity Business Casual and Gestational Diabetes

Every now and then, life throws you a curve ball. A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of finally getting diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes. I say finally, not because I was expecting it or suffering from symptoms but because with only 8 weeks left in my pregnancy, it seemed strange to wait so long to make a potentially crucial change in my diet. Luckily, I'm borderline so my blood sugar hasn't be spiking regularly and since I'm a healthy eater, it hasn't affected Bump or I.

Even though Bump is in the 50th percentile (perfectly average) I freaked out about him having a health complication. For those of you that don't know, Gestational Diabetes can cause Macrosomia, the medical term for a big baby. No, I'm not worried about labouring a large child, I'm worried about him putting on excess weight due to his insulin production because I can't process glucose. Not to mention his increased risk for obesity and diabetes later in life. Needless to say, I freaked out!

I'm pretty sure my OB is used to my brain going wild when a test result comes back less than ideal. She has been so patient and reassuring and immediately prescribed a glucose monitor, signed me up for a dietitian course and referred me to an Endocrinologist. After logging my foods and testing my blood 2 hours after every meal (must be below 6.6 mmol/L) I feel totally reassured and in control. I'm sharing this because I'm hoping to encourage other mommas to educate and monitor themselves to be their healthiest for their babies and not freak out too much (good luck!). As well, don't fudge your results. I've heard of several woman eating something bad and not fessing up to it due to guilt. The only people you're cheating is you and your baby. If that's not a good reason to cut out white bread, I don't know what is! lol

I should also mention that they recommend eating 5 small meals that all include some kind of carb. It's not bad at all! lol If you do have something that your body doesn't process well, you can easily lower your number by going for a short walk. I personally noticed that my breakfast (2 slices of whole wheat toast with peanut butter) always registers low because I eat it while walking to work. I know make sure I go for a 30 minute walk after I eat my lunch. A little light exercise goes a long way!
